6 Things That Most People Assume Are Covered By Their Car Insurance, But Are Not.

September 17, 2024

Assumptions, we all have them from time to time, and unfortunately we're wrong about many of them. It's human nature. Here are several things that most people often assume are covered by their car insurance but typically are not:

  1. Personal Belongings Inside the Car: Many people believe that personal items, like laptops, phones, or other valuables stolen from or damaged inside their car, are covered by their auto insurance. However, auto insurance generally does not cover personal property. This coverage is usually part of a homeowner's or renter's insurance policy.

  2. Normal Wear and Tear: Car insurance usually does not cover damage resulting from normal wear and tear, such as brake replacements, tire wear, or oil changes. These are considered maintenance issues and are the owner's responsibility.

  3. Custom Parts and Equipment: Standard auto insurance policies often do not cover custom parts, such as upgraded sound systems, custom paint jobs, or aftermarket modifications, unless specifically added to the policy with an endorsement.

  4. Rental Car Insurance for Loss of Use: Many assume that if their car is in the shop after an accident, their insurance will automatically cover the cost of a rental car. However, this is often an add-on called "rental reimbursement coverage" and may not be included in a basic policy.

  5. Damages from Intentional Acts or Races: Damages resulting from intentional acts, like vandalizing your own car or participating in street racing, are typically excluded from coverage.

  6. Using the Car for Business Purposes: If you use your car for business purposes (like delivering food or goods) and get into an accident, your personal auto insurance policy might not cover the damages. A commercial auto insurance policy or an endorsement for business use may be required.
