How often should you have your chimney cleaned?

It is finally Fall in the Hudson Valley!  This is our favorite time of year, hay rides, apple picking, leaf blowing, prepping the house for another Hudson Valley winter…..  Sorry, we got lost in out “To Do” list!  Many of us are preparing for another Hudson Valley winter and those of us with fireplaces and wood burning stoves are making an appointment with our local chimney sweep.

You should have your chimney cleaned and inspected once a year, preferably in the fall just before the temperature starts to drop and here is why –

  • Cleaning away last year’s soot and creosote significantly decreases the chance of a chimney fire.
  • During the Spring and Summer chipmunks, birds, and other critters have been known to nest or hide nuts in chimneys.  These must be removed before you light your first fire of the season.
  • A chimney fire can happen without you realizing it and leave your chimney damaged.  This damage must be repaired before you use the fireplace or stove again.

Having your chimney cleaned and inspected once a year is the best way to prevent chimney fires, and your homeowner’s insurance company will thank you for it!
