Hudson Valley Agents has adopted the #insurelocal hashtag for a very good reason, we have 5, yes 5, New York state-based insurance companies that we work with and that is a pretty big deal.
When you insure with a regionally based insurance company your rates are regionally based. For example, if your homeowners insurance is with Allstate or State Farm then you might have noticed an increase in your premiums after the California wild fires destroyed so many homes. This happens when your insurance company covers everything everywhere. A locally based insurance company’s rates reflect the risks and losses of their region and not the rest of the country.
If you would like to #insurelocal then give us a call, we work with these local companies –
- Eastern Insurance, Greenville NY, Orange county
- Preferred Mutual, New Berlin NY, Chenango county
- Utica First, Utica NY, Oneida county
- Claverack Cooperative Insurance, Claverack NY, Columbia county
- Mid-Hudson Cooperative Insurance, Montgomery NY, Orange county
Keep your money where you live, shop locally, eat locally, play locally, and insure locally with Hudson Valley Agents!
With the right precautions in place, having your motorcycle stolen is something you hope not to experience. To ensure that your motorcycle stays in place, below are a few ideas to help keep your motorcycle secure.
Maintain the motorcycle parked in a garage or a carport. Motorcycles are small and can be parked in tighter spaces and if you do not have a garage, find an area where the motorcycle is not out in the open and can be hidden or sheltered.
Motorcycles come with steering locks that when turned, acts as a lock in a door. Locks make the movement and maneuvering of the bike hard to do and discourage theft. If you are parking a motorcycle in a place where you can lock it to a fence or pole, do so. Unfortunately, with a bit of manpower, a motorcycle can be stolen by just lifting it on or into another truck. If the motorcycle is locked to something else, this creates another step and acts as a deterrent.
Installing an alarm system on your motorcycle is an inexpensive way to help deter thieves. Although there are many alarms on vehicles and motorcycles today, a loud noise provides an attraction that thieves do not want to be a part of.
Having the right type of insurance coverage is a step you don’t want to overlook in owning a motorcycle so that in the case of an unfortunate event, replacing your motorcycle is not on lockdown either. Call Hudson Valley Agents today, serving the Walden area, to discuss insurance options and costs for the motorcycle you own.
Mountain driving, especially at night requires special skills. Driving through upstate New York is especially dangerous for motorcycle riders when passing through areas such as the Stewart State Forest. This part of New York has abundant deer that cross the roads at night. Deer are more active now through the end of January because it is mating season.
Here are a few safety tips that help motorcycle riders avoid hitting deer at night:
- When there is no oncoming traffic, use the high beam headlight to look as far down the road as possible.
- Look for the reflection of the headlight in the bright eyes of deer that may be crossing the road or coming into the road from either side.
- When seeing one deer, expect it to be with others.
- Try to stay toward the center of the road to have time to react if a deer suddenly darts into the road.
- Go slowly around curves when there is not a clear view of what may be in the road.
- If you see a deer in the road, honk the horn for a long time to warn the deer and get it to move off the road.
- If a deer runs into the road and there is no time to stop, brake and hold position instead of trying to turn, because turning may actually cause you to hit the deer when it tries to jump out of the way.
- Be sure to wear a helmet at all times when riding a motorcycle and have any passenger wear a helmet as well.
- Leave plenty of space between motorcycles if traveling with other motorcycle riders.

When you hear the word “captive” what is the first thought that comes into your head? Is it of a prisoner stuck behind bars with no freedom and no choices? That is the image that most people come up with, and why wouldn’t they? Merriam-Webster defines the word captive as – “taken and held as or as if a prisoner of war” or “kept within bounds or confined”. Neither definition has a positive ring to it. So why would anyone consider purchasing insurance through a captive agent?
A captive insurance agent is an insurance agent that can only offer you insurance the insurance options that their company offers. State Farm agents can only offer you the choices that State Farm has to offer and an Allstate agent’s rates are only as low as Allstate allows, their agents cannot look outside of their insurance company to find you insurance coverage that might better fit your needs. When you are talking about insurance the word captive means – NO CHOICE. We live in a world full of choices, why would we choose an insurance agent that has no choices at all?
Hudson Valley Agents is an independent insurance agency. We work with many different insurance companies (many of which are New York State based) and because we are independent we can find you an insurance policy that fits both your needs and your budget. We offer insurance choices that benefit our clients and all of the insurance companies we work with have an A- rating or better on AM Best.
We live in a world of choices and if your one size fits most insurance company doesn’t offer you something different from the rest then make the smart choice and go with a local independent insurance agency like Hudson Valley Agents. Don’t be held captive call HVA today!
You won’t find the insurance companies we work with blasting their jingles from your radio, they don’t have cavemen or lizards for mascots, and you won’t find any spots stadiums bearing their names and believe it or not this is a really good thing. There is a reason for this – when the product that you offer has real value to the people who purchase it word of mouth can be the best advertising!
Whenever I work out of our Walden office I often hear our clients talking to Kathy and Ashley, they say things like – “I’ve never heard of Maphre before you quoted me my car insurance, but I’m really happy I went with them.” or “I didn’t know that Preferred Mutual is a New York State insurance company, talk about keeping it local!” When you call Hudson Valley Agents for an insurance quote you might not always recognize the names of the insurance companies we work with and that is why I wanted to introduce you to a few of them today.
Preferred Mutual – This Chenango county based company was founded in 1896 and they only work with independent agents. The Professional Insurance Agents (aka PIA) ranks them as the 4th top performer in New York state.
Maphre– This company began in 1972 in Webster, Massachusetts and went by the name The Commerce Group. Today they are known as Maphre and they have branched out to 19 US states.
Mercury Insurance – Mercury Insurance is a California based company and it has been in business for over 50 years.
Before HVA decides to work with an insurance company our VP, Dave Jr, looks them over from stem to stern. They have to offer his clients great insurance at reasonable prices and they must address insurance claims quickly and fairly. If an insurance company cannot give our clients the best insurance value for their hard earned money then we will not work with them.
Take a moment to get to know HVA and the insurance companies we work with and then give us a call at 778-2141. You and your bank account will be very happy you did. Low cost NY insurance that still comes with a live agent!
Motorcycle safety isn’t just for those who ride motorcycles! Being aware of the fact that you share the road with not only motorcycles but bicycles will ensure your safety and theirs too. More motorcycle Vs car accidents happen in urban areas than rural ones –
The truth of the matter is that quite often cars just seem to pay attention to motorcycles and that’s a HUGE problem.
The men and women that ride are Mom’s and Dad’s, sisters and brothers, Aunts and Uncles.

I spoke to a woman today who told me that she is paying way too much for insurance but she will not change companies because she’s uncomfortable trusting any insurance agent to not be “a sleaze ball”, and that my friend’s is an exact quote. I told her about Hudson Valley Agents, I even went so far as to say, “Hudson Valley Agents is the Hudson Valley’s best family owned independent insurance agency!”, talk about shameless promotion! I think insurance agents have an undeserved bad reputation so today’s blog should help clean that up.
Independent insurance agents are some of the hardest working people in the insurance business and perhaps it is time we acknowledged this fact. Before one can actually call themselves an insurance agent they have to learn the business, they have to study and pass a state licensing test and have hours of continuing education to keep that license. They need to be versed in many different types of insurance and have a well honed business sense. They must calmly and compassionately help clients who have just suffered a tragedy (house fire, car accident, death of a loved one). They are part financial planner, part counselor, part insurance law expert, and part business person all rolled up in one.
When you look for a new independent insurance agent there are things you need to keep in mind –
1- It isn’t all about money. A good insurance agent will find you the best coverage available even if it is with a company that pays the agent a low commission. The client must come first.
2- They have to give above average customer service. Normally people only speak to their insurance agent when they first purchase their policy, when they need to add or subtract something from their policy, or when they need to make a claim. They have only two or three interactions in which to make a positive impression. When a client needs to make a claim or change their coverage they expect to be taken care of promptly and professionally so good customer service is the key to repeat business.
3- You need to be pretty darn smart to be an insurance agent. Life insurance, business insurance, auto insurance, homeowners insurance, boat insurance, classic car insurance, vacation insurance, wedding insurance, and many, many other types of insurance policies are sold by the same agency and your agent should be able to answer any question you have about any aspect of your policy.
4- Independent insurance agencies are usually a family affair. Our agency is a father and son agency and together they have several decades of insurance knowledge. When something is part of your family you work harder for it. Your business reputation and your family reputation go hand in hand.
Remember the lady I spoke of in the beginning of the blog? She just called me and asked for Hudson Valley Agent’s phone number (845-778-2141). She told me that if anyone could speak so highly of her insurance agent then they must be worth looking into! When you find a great insurance agent it’s kind of hard to keep quiet about it so if you love your insurance agent tell a friend or two and share the love. Hudson Valley Agents is the Hudson Valley’s best family owned independent insurance agency. Let them show you that the best insurance in the Hudson Valley can be found at Hudson Valley Agents.
