Motorcycle insurance for the Hudson Valley

Yesterday one of our clients told us that “Spring is not officially here until you see your first Harley heading to the Gunks.”  and we happen to agree with him!

For all of you first-time riders out there, the New York State Motorcycle Safety Program is the place to learn road safety as well as the rules of the road, and it isn’t just for beginners either, even long-time riders can hone their riding skills.

Motorcycles and bicycles are the most vulnerable of travelers and their safety relies on what they do, and what the cars around them do.   Everyone must look twice and remember to share the road!

Always put safety first, obey the traffic laws, wear the proper gear, and carry the right motorcycle insurance!

National Insurance Awareness Day

The Oxford Dictionary defines the word insurance as, “A thing providing protection against a possible eventuality.” and Merriam – Webster defines insurance as, “A means of guaranteeing protection or safety.”.   Insurance is our business so we have always defined it by the protection it provides our clients as well as ourselves but not everyone sees insurance the same way.  Today’s blog post is about increasing awareness of what insurance does for you.  We’ll do our best not to speak in the same tired cliches our industry is known for and offer you a fresh perspective on what many think of as a boring industry.

When we asked our staff what aspects of insurance they most wished our clients were aware of they told us this:

Dave Jr, owner of Hudson Valley Agents,  would like our clients to be aware of the fact that insurance “Is highly regulated by the state of NY, that is why it is less expensive in many other states”.  That explains the enormous difference in the cost of auto insurance from state to state.  For questions on this topic, please send an email to davejr@hvagents.com

Kathy would like her commercial clients to know that properly cancelling your policy, rather than allowing it to lapse due to non-payment, will make it easier for you to re-insure with that company again and it can save you money in the long run.  For questions about insurance for your business, please email Kathy at kathy@hvagents.com

Ashley handles our personal lines.  She would like her personal auto insurance clients to know that rental car coverage does not mean that you can rent a car while you are on vacation and your insurance will pay for it.  Rental car coverage means that your insurance company will pay for a rental car if your own car has been damaged in an accident.  For questions about personal home or auto insurance, please contact Ashley at ashley@hvagents.com

Philip wishes more business owners were aware of the differences between personal auto insurance, commercial auto insurance, and Hired/Non-owned coverage.  If you or your employees routinely travel to deliver goods or services there are policies that protect them and your business should there be an auto accident while en route to a delivery.  Ensuring that you have the proper coverage will save you a headache later on and the coverage is affordable too.  For further information on this, please contact Philip at philip@hvagents.com.

Insurance impacts our lives in so many ways, it is important to understand what your policies cover and what they do not.  We are always happy to share our knowledge, so if you have questions about your insurance, please do not hesitate to contact us, we are always happy to be of service!

Meet our staff – Ashley Berry

Ashley Berry is amazing.  Ashley handles personal lines in our Walden office, and if you have ever called us for a homeowners or auto quote she’s the lady you spoke to.  She has a talent for taking insurance-speak and making it understandable to the average mortal, so when you she explains your insurance coverage to you, you actually understand it!

Ashley is pretty crafty, check out the fairy gardens she created for our office!

She occasionally sells her fairy gardens so stop by and see her latest creations!

This isn’t Ashley’s first time being featured in our blog, so we had to switch up her bio questions-

What is your favorite song? – Build Me Up Buttercup

What is your favorite movie – Legand with Tom Cruise

How long have you been in the insurance biz? 3 1/2 years

If someone made a movie about your life who would play you?  Lisa Kudrow

What is your favorite place to visit in the Hudson Valley?  New Paltz

We are lucky to have Ashley on our team, her can-do attitude and her gorgeous fairy gardens brighten our office every day.  She can build a garden and she can insure it!    #HudsonValleyAgents  #insurelocal #fairygardens

Top 5 New Year’s resolutions in the Hudson Valley

There are only 4 more days left in 2016, and for that we are thankful!  2016 has been the year from hell for most of America and we find ourselves looking towards 2017 with hope and a little bit of nervous laughter.  2017 will be welcomed in with hearts filled with the hope that this will be the year we actually keep our New Year’s resolutions.

Making resolutions for the new year is something we have all done and 2017 will be no exception.  An impromptu poll of Hudson Valley residents (we asked our friends and family members) shows that these are the 5 most popular Hudson Valley New Year’s resolutions:

1- Lose 10 pounds

2- Save money

3- Live your best life

4- Shop locally more often

5- Become more organized

Hudson Valley Agents can help you keep 3 out of 5 of these resolutions!

  • Saving money on your insurance is easy, call, click, or stop by for a free quote on all of your insurance needs.  We work with many insurance companies that offer competitive rates and many of them are located on the east coast.
  • We love to shop local and we really love to insure local!  We work with several Hudson Valley-based insurance companies as well as companies based in New York state.  We also offer affordable insurance coverage for small businesses throughout the state.  You can always #insurelocal with us!
  • Organizing your insurance policies is easy with our free app for iPhone and Android users!  Finding your policies, making claims, making payments, even finding your car in a crowded parking lot just became a whole lot easier.

Big name insurance that comes with a small town agent

big-name-ins-company-sm-twn-ins-agent

You do not have to go online to insure your car, boat, or motorcycle with one of the big insurance companies like Liberty Mutual or Progressive Insurance! I mean you can, but why? Hudson Valley Agents can do everything an online insurance company can do, and then some.

Let’s talk about the differences between getting your car insurance directly from the company versus purchasing car insurance through Hudson Valley Agents:

DIRECTLY FROM THE COMPANY

  • You can shop for car insurance from your couch
  • Quick and convenient
  • Online bill pay
  • Helpful free app
  • No assistance comparing previous coverage to current coverage
  • No way to know if another company would be cheaper
  • Does not come with an “insurance speak” translator
  • No way to know if you are under insured or over insured
  • Good customer service

HUDSON VALLEY AGENTS

  • You still do not have to leave your couch
  • Also quick and convenient
  • Same access to online bill pay
  • We have a free app too, bill pay, claims, find your car, and more
  • We put our decades of insurance knowledge to work helping you choose the best coverage for your insurance needs
  • We work with 20 different insurance companies, some of which are located right here in the Hudson Valley, and we do the rate shopping for you. By the way, we also write insurance through those same big online companies like Progressive Insurance and Liberty Mutual.
  • We eat, sleep, and dream in insurance speak, and we know how to translate it too
  • Finding you the right coverage is what we do best
  • We offer an excellent customer experience
  • We can accept payments at either of our two locations (Walden or Middletown) Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, and we usually have candy at our desks (just saying…)

Progressive Insurance and Hudson Valley Agents are working together to bring the best auto insurance to everyone in the Hudson Valley! Find out what makes us different, call, click or stop in today.

Tricks and Treats in the Hudson Valley

halloween-in-the-hudson-valley

The day after Halloween is one of the busiest days in our office.  November 1 is the day we field phone calls from our insureds who’s homes and cars have been damaged by Halloween pranksters.  There are steps you can take to prevent damage to your home:

  • Use LED candles instead of real ones in your Jack O’Laterns and bring them inside once you’ve stopped handing out candy.
  • Make sure all walkways are well lit to help little ghosts and ghouls find their way and prevent falls.
  • Park all cars, bikes, and motorcycles inside of your garage.
  • Leave outdoor lighting on all night long.  A well-lit home is an undamaged home.

If you wake up and find that your home or car has been damaged (toilet paper in your trees, eggs smashed on your car, mangled mailbox, or a flour covered front porch) make a policy report and call your insurance agent.  Most homeowners policies cover this type of damage but speak to your agent first; you might want to consider paying for it out of pocket.

Halloween in the Hudson Valley isn’t all about preventing teens from toilet papering your trees; it’s about Halloween candy!  Recently we shared a post about the most popular Halloween candies in America; each state was listed, and New York’s favorite is supposed to be Sweet Tarts.  That just didn’t sound right to us, so we got in touch with Diane at the Kingston Candy Bar.  Her best-selling products right now are –

kcb-zombie-pops Zombie Pops

kcb-spell-book Marshmellow Spell Book

So, which would you rather have, Sweet Tarts or Zombie Pops?  We’re betting on Zombie Pops.

Enjoy your Halloween Hudson Valley!  #shoplocal  #insurelocal  #HudsonValleyAgents  #HalloweenintheHudsonValley

Fall, it is our favorite season in the Hudson Valley!  Our local Farmer’s Markets are chock full of gorgeous seasonal produce, the kids (and adults) are choosing Halloween costumes, and our backs are just a little achy from raking leaves.  When you’ve finished your fall clean up and prepping for another infamous Hudson Valley winter, it is time to reevaluate your insurance needs.  Filling in any coverage gaps in your homeowners insurance now that the springtime remodeling job is finished, taking a second look at your car insurance needs now that one of the kids has finally moved out, and bunding your motorcycle and snowmobile coverage for an added discount can all mean more money in your pocket for the upcoming holiday season.

Happy Fall Hudson Valley!  Shop local.  Eat local.  Insure local.
