April is Distracted Driving Awareness month

arrive alive dont text and drive

Did you know that in 2014 3,179 people lost their lives due to distracted driving?  That same year there were 431,000 people were injured due to distracted driving?  We really need to learn how to put away our phones, put down our latte’s and pay attention to what’s most important – Arriving Alive.

Distracted driving does not always involve your cell phone.  The simple act of changing a CD can cause you to take your eyes off of the road long enough to cause an accident.  My daughter totaled her Honda when she looked away from the road for a split second to change a CD, something we all have done thousands of times.  She did not suffer any physical damage, I guess you could say that she’s one of the lucky ones.  Eating while driving, applying lipstick, or just sipping from your to-go mug are all forms of distracted driving and all of these activities can wait until you arrive at your destination.

Apps like Canary can help your teen (or husband) put down the phone while they are behind the wheel and there are so many distracted driving PSA’s on Youtube that you can share with them as well.

We care about you and your family and that’s why we do all that we can to educate parents and their teens about the dangers of distracted driving.  For further information about distracted driving or insuring your teenage driver please call Hudson Valley Agents at 778-2141.  #insurelocal
