Now it’s time to think about your security and safety on your trip. Many tourists end up victims of some sort of crime during their trip. Here are some tips for staying safe, particularly if you’re traveling alone.

• Always be aware of surroundings.
• Stay in well lit areas.
• Avoid going out late at night if at all possible.
• Stick to crowded places where help is a shout away.
• Carry self-protection items with you everywhere, such as a can of mace.
• Keep your cell phone charged and have important phone numbers in your contacts.
• Let a friend or relative know where you are going and when you expect to return – that way, if you don’t return, someone can take steps to locate you.
